The activities of the Hebrew Resistance Movement continue, and there is an
upsurge in clandestine immigration. The British arrest more than 1,000
"illegal" immigrants in the port of La Spezia in Italy, before
they set sail for Palestine. The "illegal" immigrants declare a
hunger strike, and the Yishuv leaders join them. The affair has a serious
impact around the world and the British decide to provide the olim with
government permits (known as "certificates") to sail to
Palestine.
