1933 With the rise of the Nazis in Germany, Jewish aliyah to Eretz Israel intensifies. This is promptly named the Fifth Aliyah. Even though the majority of immigrants are from Eastern Europe, it is referred to as the immigrant wave from Germany and central Europe (although they only comprise one-quarter of the immigrants). For that reason the Fifth Aliyah is also referred to as the German Aliyah. Within six-and-a-half years, close to a quarter of a million Jews make aliyah. |
