It started today the Yom Kippur war broke as Egypt and Syria attacked Israel
during the Yom Kippur holiday in 1973.
The two Arab states attacked with hundreds of planes and more than a thousand
tanks.
By the end of the day, 200,000 Israeli soldiers, most of whom were mobilizing
reservists faced 300,000 Syrians and 850,000 Egyptians.
In the course of the war Israel suffered between 2,521 and 2,800 killed in
action.
An additional 7,250 to 8,800 soldiers were wounded. Some 293 Israelis were
captured.
The peace discussion at the end of the war was the first time that Arab and
Israeli officials met for direct public discussions since the aftermath of the
1948 war.
