One of the most moving stops on any historical tour of Buenos Aires is the Hotel de Inmigrantes, now home to the Museo de la Inmigración. This photo shows the original dormitories where newly arrived immigrants — including many Jewish families fleeing Europe — were housed free of charge for up to five days while they searched for work and a place to call home.
Rows of simple iron bunks tell the story of the hundreds of thousands of people who passed through these halls on their way to building new lives in Argentina. Walking through the museum today offers a powerful glimpse into the immigrant experience that shaped modern Buenos Aires.
